Best Rust Base Designs
Proven base designs for every group size. Each includes build costs, a floor plan, and the estimated raid cost so you know exactly how secure your base is.
π Solo Starter β The 2Γ1 Airlock
The classic solo base. Cheap, fast to build on wipe day, and surprisingly tanky when upgraded to stone or sheet metal. The triangle airlock prevents door camping.

Sulfur (cheapest)
- Upgrade to stone immediately β twig and wood can be speared through
- Place sleeping bag and TC in the back room, away from the door
- Always close both airlock doors before opening boxes
π₯ Duo Base β The 2Γ2 Honeycomb
A solid mid-game base for two players. The 2Γ2 core with honeycomb forces raiders to go through multiple walls, costing thousands of sulfur per wall.

Sulfur (cheapest)
- Place TC in the center room with no direct door access β raiders must go through walls
- Use garage doors internally β they're stronger than sheet metal doors
- Spread loot across multiple rooms so raiders can't grab everything at once
- Add a roof access hatch for a shooting floor on top
π₯π₯ Group Base β The Compact Fortress
For groups of 3β5 players. Multiple airlocks, a shooting floor, and deep honeycomb make this a tough base to crack without a massive sulfur investment.

Sulfur minimum
- Two separate entrances prevent getting door camped with no escape
- Place auto turrets on the shooting floor covering entrances
- Upgrade the TC room walls to armored (250 HQM each) for maximum protection
- Use large wood boxes in the loot rooms and spread valuables evenly
General Base Building Tips
- Always upgrade from twig immediately β twig has only 10 HP and can be destroyed with a few hits
- Stone is the best cost-to-protection ratio for most players. Sheet metal is better against explosives but weaker to fire
- Garage doors are the most cost-effective internal doors β 150 metal frags, 2 gears, and they absorb more damage than sheet metal doors
- Spread loot across multiple rooms. Never put all your best loot in one room
- Build multiple sleeping bags in different rooms so you always have a spawn point
- Place your TC in the hardest room to reach. The TC is the key to your base β if raiders destroy it, they can build into your base
- Consider building a small external TC base nearby to prevent griefing after a raid
FAQ
- What is the best solo base design in Rust?
- The best solo base is a 2Γ1 with triangle airlock, upgraded to sheet metal. It is cheap to build, easy to maintain, and costs raiders more to break in than the loot is worth. Expand to a 2Γ2 as you progress.
- How much does it cost to raid a stone 2Γ2 in Rust?
- A stone 2Γ2 with a sheet metal door costs about 1 C4 or 2 rockets to breach the door, or 4 rockets to go through a stone wall. Total sulfur cost is roughly 2,200β5,600 depending on the path.
- What is honeycombing in Rust?
- Honeycombing means adding extra layers of walls around your base core. Each layer forces raiders to use more explosives to reach your loot, dramatically increasing the raid cost.
- What is an airlock in Rust?
- An airlock is a small room between your base entrance and main room with two doors. If a door camper opens your outer door, they still cannot reach your loot room due to the second door.
